Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin refused to embrace New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as the GOP’s presumptive 2016 nominee Monday, despite growing support for the popular governor following his landslide reelection victory.

“I would never put my faith and hope in any one politician,” Palin said on Monday on NBC’s “Today.” “There is no Ronald Reagan on the scene today.”

But the former Republican vice presidential nominee wasn’t totally dismissive of Christie’s success within the party.

“Hey, New Jersey, a blue state, has a Republican governor,” Palin said. “Beats the alternative.”

Palin’s comment’s come as rumors swirl over whether Christie, who last week won reelection in mostly Democratic New Jersey by a 22-percentage-point margin, will run for president in 2016.

Several recent polls show that Christie  who added fuel to the fire Sunday after refusing to commit to serving out his new term  would be an instant front-runner if he decided to take a shot at the GOP presidential nomination.

But despite his popularity, Christie might still face an uphill battle for the nomination, as more conservative Republicans, like Palin, criticize his bipartisan style.

“He was a successful governor in New Jersey,” Texas Gov. Rick Perry, another potential 2016 candidate, said Sunday. “Is a conservative in New Jersey a conservative in the rest of the country? We’ll have that discussion at the appropriate time.”
